Chargers Snag QB of the Future in Oregon’s Justin Herbert in Round One of NFL Draft

With Philip Rivers gone to Indy, the Bolts needed a QB badly as relying on Tyrod Taylor long term is just not the answer for the team.

The team on Thursday went with a QB with the 6th pick in the draft, taking Oregon QB Justin Herbert who they hope can step in as the new franchise QB.

Lindsey Thiry of ESPN wrote about the Bolts motivation to take the QB in the first round:

The Chargers needed a quarterback after Philip Rivers departed in free agency after 16 seasons. After the Dolphins selected Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 pick, it became almost certain the Chargers would take Herbert at No. 6. A proven winner at Oregon, Herbert has great arm strength and is agile outside of the pocket. From the 2018 to 2019 season, Herbert had the sixth-highest increase in completion percentage, jumping from 59% to 67%. He joins an offense that has established weapons in receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, as well as tight end Hunter Henry.

Here is CBS Sports’ reaction to Herbert going with the 6th pick to the Chargers:

  1. Matthew Shishkoff says:

Herbert was definitely the right pick for the Chargers. Hopefully he performs well early on and establishes himself as a star franchise player who will stay with the chargers for the long run. His stats and accomplishments alone prove that he is capable of performing well in the NFL. I found on this one Scouting Report on Justin Herbert that he was the 2020 Senior Bowl and Rose Bowl. It also mentioned how he has terrific natural arm talent, great overall athleticism, and has terrific ball placement on downfield throws. These are great qualities to have for a QB. I can’t wait to see what he does for the Chargers. https://prosportsoutlook.com/pso-scouting-report-qb-justin-herbert/
