Chargers Release Statement About Mike Williams Being Shut Down for Rest of Camp

The Chargers have released a statement announcing their decision to shut down first-round wide receiver Mike Williams for the remainder of training camp according to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com.

Williams, the No.7-overall pick in this year’s draft out of Clemson, has been out since the first practice of rookie minicamp with a herniated disc in his back and started training camp on the PUP list. “Mike saw our doctors yesterday,” the statement reads, “and he will continue to progress on Dr. Robert Watkins’ plan. He will rehab and strengthen his back and is not expected to practice during training camp.”

It now seems increasingly possible that Williams will not be able to answer the bell for Week 1 of the regular season-and beyond. He is a likely candidate for the reserve/PUP list, which would cost him the first six games of the season, and any decision to undergo surgery to fix the back issue would keep him out for his entire rookie season.
