Gates Says Rivers Has Been ‘Toughing Out’ a Severe Rib Injury

Oakland Raiders v San Diego Chargers

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers gave onlookers a couple held-breath moments in the second half, one when his left leg got rolled up on and another when hit to the mid-section on a third-down sack.

Following a 13-6 win over the Raiders, tight end Antonio Gates told a group of reporters that rib pain for Rivers was nothing new, Michael Gehlken of UT San Diego reports.

Rivers never exited the game, not for the tweaked knee or rib shot.

He was evaluated on the sideline in both instances. Reserve quarterback Kellen Clemens warmed up after a hunched-over Rivers walked to the sideline following the latter.

“He’s showed a lot in the past, his mental toughness, his will to win and overcome anything he’s dealing with from a physical standpoint,” Gates said.

“Not for once did I think he was going to go out of the game. I watched the guy play with a torn ACL. He takes some shots. He’s taken some shots all year. For those who don’t know, he’s been dealing with a rib injury, a very severe rib injury, so he’s been toughing it out these last three or four weeks.”

Reached later, Rivers downplayed the situation.

“I’m no more banged up than other quarterback in the league,” Rivers said. “All good.”

It is unclear when Rivers sustained the injury Gates referenced.

Well if this is how Rivers plays with a rib injury, he should always play with one because with a QBR above 101 this season while his career QBR is 96.4, it says a ton about his competitive spirit.
