The San Diego Chargers announced late Tuesday that former Colts running back Donald Brown had agreed to a three-year deal with the team.

The 2009 first round pick totaled 551 carries for 2,377 yards (4.3 YPC) in his five years with the Colts and added 19 total touchdowns. He joins a Chargers backfield that includes Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown (no relation to Donald), who is currently a free agent.

It will be interesting to see how the ball gets distributed between the three backs currently under contract.

Mathews is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is coming off his best (and first healthy) season in San Diego with career highs in carries (285) and yards (1,255)

Woodhead showed ability as a change-of-pace back with 182 total touches for 1,034 yards and eight scores.

Brown’s build and numbers mirror Mathews’ and both are 26 years old. Could Brown’s signing indicate that the Chargers plan to move on from Mathews after the 2014 season?
