Reich Ready To Step In If Chargers Lose Whisenhunt

The Chargers have a game plan for the Broncos on Sunday and another in case they lose their offensive coordinator, Ken Whisenhunt, to a head-coaching opportunity in another city, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

If Whisenhunt leaves San Diego, the Chargers would likely promote their quarterbacks coach Frank Reich, best known for leading a record-setting comeback for the Buffalo Bills against the Houston Oilers in the 1992 playoffs and his work with quarterback Philip Rivers, to offensive coordinator, league sources said.

Whisenhunt also would like to take Reich with him as his offensive coordinator, if he is hired again as a head coach. But the Chargers would control whether Reich could stay or leave, and San Diego likes him as its next offensive coordinator if Whisenhunt winds up elsewhere.
