Ryan Mathews Misses Another Practice For Chargers

Ryan Mathews, Charles Tillman

It seems increasingly likely that the Chargers could be without one of their most important offensive weapons against the Broncos on Sunday.

Starting running back Ryan Mathews missed his third straight day of practice on Friday according to Michael Gehlken of utsandiego.com and is listed as questionable.

Mathews has been playing without much practice time in recent weeks, but aggravated his ankle injury in last week’s win at Cincinnati.

He still has until Sunday to heal but both his availability and ability to be effective against the Broncos is in doubt. This is a particularly big deal as the Chargers’ game plan is keeping the ball out of Peyton Manning’s hands with long drives and lots of ball-control offense.

That strategy worked to perfection in San Diego’s big Week 15 upset in Denver when Mathews ran the ball 29 times. Look for lots of Ronnie Brown and Danny Woodhead if Mathews cannot answer the bell.
