T Marcus McNeill Placed on IR; Claim Jared Gaither Off Waivers

The Chargers will place offensive tackle Marcus McNeill on injured reserve after claiming offensive tackle Jared Gaither off waivers from the Chiefs, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

McNeill has missed the last two games after injuring his neck in a loss to the Oakland Raiders on November 10. Neck injuries have been an issue for McNeill, who was diagnosed with spinal stenosis before he entered the NFL and underwent surgery on his neck after missing a pair of games in 2008.

Gaither spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, who selected the 6-foot-9, 340-pound left tackle in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Supplemental Draft. Gaither started 28 games over his first three seasons in the league before missing 2010 with a back injury and signing with the Chiefs as a free agent in August.

Gaither appeared in 10 games for the Chiefs in a reserve role, but committed a costly false start penalty on the final drive of Sunday night’s 13-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and found himself on the waiver wire.

By claiming Gaither, the Chargers are on the hook for the $201,471 that remain on his 2011 base salary.
