Chargers Take DE Corey Liuget with the 18th Overall Pick

The Chargers again went to upgrade the defense in the first round of the 2011 draft, as they went with Illinios defensive tackle Corey Liuget. The big man had 125 career tackles in college, 25.5 for losses.

Here’s our scouting report for Liuget:

COREY LIUGET, DT, ILLINOIS

Triangle Numbers: 6-3, 300, 5.00

Scouting Reports:

FF Toolbox:

University of Illinois defensive tackle Corey Liuget declared himself early for the 2011 NFL Draft. Liuget’s 2010 season marked his first as a full-time starter, but he certainly made the most of his time. He had 63 total tackles and five sacks this season.

Liuget has the appropriate size for his position. What makes him special is that he is also athletic with good quickness and footwork. He is consistently disruptive, likes to bull-rush his way into the backfield, handles double-teams well and plays with a tough energy.

While he lacks pass-rushing moves, he gets after the play so hard that he is difficult to block, especially in one-on-one. Liuget could play as a defensive tackle in a 4-3 or an end in a 3-4. He will need to work on small technique issues, such as staying on assignment and keeping contain on certain plays.

Liuget is likely a top five amongst the defensive tackles of this 2011 class. With a strong combine performance, he could even be top three due to his athleticism, versatility and prototypical size.

Liuget projects as a second round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Matt’s Take: Always showed up on film when it counted, and a guy that should only help out the Chargers D-line with Larry English being the other top draft pick from two years ago. Liuget has been known to have conditioning issues, and he can wear down, and will have to work on that to be a top DE in the NFL.
