TE Antonio Gates Injures Ankle Against Rams

When it rains, it pours.

On Sunday, Chargers’ tight end Antonio Gates injured his left ankle and was forced to wear a protective boot after San Diego’s 17-20 loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Gates had two catches for a combined 12 yards before leaving the game with the injury. It is speculated that he will at least miss one game, although he will undergo an MRI today to reveal the true severity of the injury.

“I couldn’t put any pressure on it,” Gates told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “On that last play where Philip hit me down the middle, a guy fell on it again. The pain became really difficult to deal with at that point.”

In one game, Gates went down with an ankle injury, wide receiver Malcom Floyd injured his hamstring and was unable to return, wide receiver Legedu Naanee was deactivated with a hamstring injury, and worst of all the Chargers lost to a team that had only won five games between 2007-2009. The playoffs are starting to move further and further out of reach as the Chargers lurch to a 2-4 start.

With Gates and Floyd possibly out of the lineup and wide receiver Vincent Jackson still holding out, the Chargers could be in real trouble next week against the New England Patriots in the way of offensive production.

Check in later today for an update on Gates’ MRI.
