Tolbert to Start for Ailing Mathews

According to multiple sources, rookie running back Ryan Mathews will see limited, if any, action in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks. Running back/Fullback Mike Tolbert will take over for Mathews after having a standout performance last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, rushing for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

Mathews, who sprained his right ankle during the Jaguars’ game, initially reported that he would be ready to go for this week’s game against the Seattle. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore as he has missed practice the last two days.

“He’s getting better,” said Chargers’ head coach Norv Turner when asked about Mathews’ status. “I haven’t ruled (him) out. I’m going to see where we are in the next two days.”

“I can play,” said Mathews. “There’s a difference between being hurt and being injured. I can play in pain. It may be a bit uncomfortable, but as long as my bone’s not sticking through the skin, I’m good to go. But I know that it’s the trainer’s decision and I’ll go along with whatever they decide.”

We’ll see on Sunday whether Mathews plays like he hopes, or whether Turner takes extra caution with one of his most valuable assets and sits him for the entire game.
