Merriman Will Most Likely Miss Opener

Linebacker Shawne Merriman will more than likely be watching the Chargers’ opening game against the Kansas City Chiefs from the sideline this Monday.

After coming back to training camp late after a contract dispute that motivated him to holdout, Merriman only practiced a few days in August before he reaggravated an Achilles’ tendon injury that has plagued him in the past.

Since these injuries have come into play for Merriman, he has fallen victim to a steep drop in performance and production. 2010 looks to be his last chance to step up and prove that he can still be the amazing, fearsome linebacker that earned the 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

With Merriman out on Monday, Chiefs’ quarterback Matt Cassel will be breathing a huge sigh of relief considering the Chargers don’t have too many players that excel at rushing the passer.

They could have used him, but it might not have helped considering Rivers blamed this loss on the man above. And I don’t mean the GM.
