Merriman’s Return Hits a Bump in the Road

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Chargers’ linebacker Shawne Merriman, who just came back from a long contract holdout, has been forced to sit out practice due to a reaggravated Achilles’ tendon injury.

The injury, which has nagged him for the past few years with the Chargers, was reaggravated Tuesday night and has sidelined Merriman for practice this week and most likely this upcoming Saturday’s pre-season game.

As Merriman puts it, the injury has given him problems “on and off for years”, but he feels that it should be too much of an issue during the regular season. However, the Chargers might not be so optimistic considering Merriman has had numerous issues with injuries over the past couple of years, including the same Achilles’ tendon injury that is resurfacing now. Hopefully the team can gain the optimism that Merriman appears to be so full of.

“The training staff does a great job recognizing what I have going on and helping me,” Merriman said. “It’s just one of those things you have to watch and maintain.”

Only time will tell if this “on and off” injury of his becomes an issue. Or maybe the reason Merriman decided to ditch his holdout efforts and sign his one-year tender was because he knew the injury was becoming a bigger issue and wanted to get paid before it was too late. Just some food for thought.
