Chargers Claim LB Highsmith Off Waivers

Today, the Chargers claimed linebacker Ali Highsmith off of waivers from the Arizona Cardinals.

Highsmith, a two-year veteran, started two games for the Cardinals last season. He was an undrafted free agent out of LSU before being signed by the Cardinals. He has played in a total of 20 games since entering the league, notching 32 total tackles both on defense and special teams.

This claim comes only a day after the devastating news that promising rookie linebacker Donald Butler will miss the entire 2010 NFL season due to an Achilles’ tendon injury that he sustained during training camp. Highsmith should come in and compete with the likes of Kevin Burnett, Antwan Applewhite, James Holt, and Kion Wilson for playing time at linebacker.

To make roster space for Highsmith, the Chargers waived wide receiver Bryan Walters, who is missing practice due to an injured hamstring. He will be placed on the IR list if another team does not claim him off of waivers.
