Rookie LB Butler Out for Entire 2010 Season

Yesterday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that rookie linebacker Donald Butler went down during practice and had to be carted off the field. Today, Acee was the bearer of bad news for us Charger fans as it appears that the Chargers will be without their third-round draft choice for all of 2010. Butler, who was going through passing drills, planted awkwardly and was unfortunate enough to tear his Achilles’ tendon.

Butler had shown promise throughout training camp and stood a good chance of pushing veteran linebacker Kevin Burnett for playing time, if not a starting job, as an outside linebacker. Now, his spot as the second-team outside linebacker will be taken by either Antwan Applewhite, James Holt or Kion Wilson.

Another promising player goes down in Charger Town and we’ll have to wait until 2011 to see what Butler was hoping to bring to the table.
