Chargers Sign Veteran TE Randy McMichael

The San Diego Chargers announced today that they signed veteran tight end Randy McMichael to a one year contract. After being eyed as a possible replacement for Brandon Manumaleuna, who signed with the Chicago Bears this off-season, the Chargers finally made the move to sign McMichael and add veteran tight end depth behind Pro Bowler Antonio Gates.

“Randy has been a targeted player for us for some time now,” said Charger GM A.J. Smith. “With the departure of Brandon to the Bears, we wanted to sign another veteran. We were hoping that would be Randy.”

McMichael played in St. Louis the last three years. Before that, he played for Miami for five years, during which time he played under coach Norv Turner. He has been an outstanding receiving tight end throughout his eight seasons in the NFL, amassing 3,996 yards on 367 catches, including 22 touchdowns.

“We’re excited to add Randy to the team,” said Turner. “He brings experience and added depth to the tight end position.”

His veteran presence and league experience will help give guidance and insight to some of the younger Charger tight ends, including rookies Dedrick Epps and Richie Brockel.
