Chargers Rally Not Enough – Steelers Win 38-28

Ben Rothlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers came out like a team on a mission shutting out the San Diego Chargers in the first half 21-0. Pittsburgh had a total of 274 yards while the Chargers only managed to rack up 74 yards. In fact the Chargers only had 3 first downs after thirty minutes of play and only had possession of the ball for just over seven minutes.

The third quarter did not start off much better for the Chargers when the Steelers scored another touchdown to bring the score to 28-0. It was almost midway through the third quarter when the Chargers managed to get past the 50 yard line for the first time and finally had possession of the ball in Pittsburgh territory. Rivers completed a series of passes to Antonio Gates and San Diego finally scored bringing the score to 28-7 going into the 4th quarter.

The Steelers had been leading going into the forth quarter the last two games only to see both games slip away and end with losses. Jacob Hester made a big play for the Chargers special teams squad by stripping the ball from Stefan Logan and taking it 41 yards for a touchdown quieting the crowd at Heinz Field.

In the end however, though the Chargers won the 4th quarter battle outscoring the Steelers 21-10 it was just not enough. The Charger offense stepped up but once again the defense just could not stop the opposition and the Steelers outlasted the Chargers and came out on top 38-28.

Rashard Mendenhall set a career high by rushing for 165 yards and scoring twice. Ben Rothlisberger was 26/33 for 333 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Philip Rivers was 21/36 and he threw for 3 touchdowns. Antonio Gates had by far his most productive game of the year scoring twice and racking up 124 receiving yards. Chris Chambers, who has been quiet thus far in the 2009 season also scored 1 TD.

Larry English, who has been playing increased minutes filling in for Shawne Merriman as he continues to attempt to get healthy, recorded his first NFL sack.

Ladainian Tomlinson returned to the field but only ran the ball 7 times for 15 yards and only caught 1 pass for -1 yard.
