Well, you can forget about Chula Vista, CA being a potential site for a new stadium for the San Diego Chargers – although who’s to say that they may nto pop up in future discussions?
According to sources familiar with the negotiations currently going on, the cities of Oceanside and Escondido are discussing a partnership that would solve some of the bigger hurdles in getting a stadium plan finalized: finding enough space for a new stadium and a mixed-use development that could possibly help the team fund the stadium.
The plan in question would have one city host the stadium while the other would build the mixed-use development to aid in the funding; in other words, as was the goal from the beginning, the stadium will be privately financed.
Also as part of the plan, one city would receive revenues from the other and the team. The aforementioned sources say that Oceanside’s public golf course would be brought up again by the city council (presumably as the locale of the proposed stadium) after it is placed on the agenda for an October session; the team will look at Escondido and the 17-acre site.
Next week, the Chargers will begin meeting with developers to discuss specific details in order to see if the plan is doable; on that note, Special Counsel to the Chargers, Mark Fabiani added:
“It sounds promising. While it is an advantage for the projects to be connected, it is possible to divide it. The key will be generating the needed revenue to privately finance a stadium.”
I certainly hope that the team and whatever partners they finally settle on find a final location. Don’t get me wrong – Qualcomm Stadium is a good place to play; however, the fact that the facility is old – by NFL standards – and there has been this need for a new facility not to mention that the current ownership will not wait forever for a deal to take place should expedite the current proceedings between the team and city officials.
