Every team in the NFL has now completed their preseason schedule and made their cuts to get down to their 53 man roster. Training camps are closed, players are back in their own beds and coaches are focused on game planning for their week one opponent.

Football fans around the world have been counting down, first to the draft, then training camp, then preseason and now – the countdown clock has reached single digits for the games that really count. The regular season is finally here.

The San Diego Chargers open their regular season schedule with a short flight up to the bay area to take on their division rival, the Oakland Raiders.

The last time these two teams met was last December when the Chargers took apart the Raiders with a 34-7 victory. Although the Raiders still hold the advantage in head to head competition between the two teams with a 56-40-2 record, the Chargers are enjoying a current 11 game win streak against Oakland.

There has been some drama in both camps the last few days with Shawne Merriman being arrested and accused of choking and restraining reality TV star Tila Tequila as she tried to leave his San Diego home. Merriman maintains that he was only concerned for her safety because she appeared to be intoxicated. While in the Oakland camp, they are on the look out for five time pro bowler Richard Seymour, who they recently acquired in a trade with New England, but so far he is a no show.

Sometimes when these two teams get together, there is as much action in the stands as on the field. The fans of Raiders and the Chargers also have a long history and there have been many fights and arrests in the past when these teams get together. Just do a search of Raiders vs. Chargers fans and you will find many videos documenting the altercations in the stands and in the parking lots.

This is first Legacy game for each team as the original 8 AFL teams celebrate their 50th anniversary. The Chargers will be in their powder blue uniforms, Bolt fans are very happy about this decision since San Diego has racked up 8 victories in a row wearing the very popular color.

So all the countdowns are over and fans have made it to the regular season. The players and coaches are making final preparations. The grounds crews are ready and the concession stands are stocked. Everything is ready for the kickoff of the 2009 season and this Monday night at 7:30 PM on ESPN’s Monday Night Football the Chargers and the Raiders will kick off their 2009 season.
