Cottrell Canned as Chargers Slumping Defensive Coordinator

Cottrell
Heading up a defense that allowed 37 points on Sunday in London, today Chargers defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell took the fall, as the team fired him heading into their bye week. San Diego has the worst pass defense in the league, and have given up point totals of 39, 29 and 37 points in going 3-5 in their first eight games.

The Chargers have allowed an average of 371.6 yards per game, 265.1 passing and 106.5 rushing. The team named former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera as their new defensive coordinator. Rivera was the Bears D-coordinator when the team made it to the Super Bowl following the 2006 season.

Rivera was a canadiate for a couple of head coaching jobs after that season, but after he was not able to land one, the Bears let him go, and he joined the Chargers staff as their inside linebackers coach. He will need to turn around a defense that has not had a sack or interception in their last nine quarters.

The change to be mase but i also feel that norm turner and his brother also need to be let go , my thinking is that even though they went further , last year than they had befre , norm turner is a oser 13 3 team to a 3 and five team when there a good defense against the charger there plays are so predictable lt right lt left lt in the middle i could put a defense against the chargers look at each game were they have lost tht can’t run there offense , so norm turner needs to go please let them move on i think rivera should have been hired for the head coaching job in the first place

Ted Cottrell is more of a Defensive line Coach that has the emphasis of stopping the running game, nothing more. He is assistant Coach material ” only “.
He doesn’t know how the Offense works in a whole, he only knows one aspect of the game and that’s the rush and trying to prevent it. When it comes to passing, he’s lost because he doesn’t understand the Offensive schemes.
