Merriman Out For Season
Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has decided to end his season after a painful first game on Sunday. According to a team statement, Merriman reconsidered his decision to forego surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee. He is expected to return in time to start the 2009 season.

LaDainian Tomlinson will begin his run at a third straight NFL rushing title when the Chargers begin regular season play this weekend. Tomlinson did not play in the preseason. The Chargers will host the Carolina Panthers in the home-opener on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium.
