Rivers Probable vs. Detroit

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers (17) gets up slowly after being hit by the Tennessee Titans.

Call it a quarterback’s mentality, but despite suffering a sprained knee last weekend – barring any setbacks – it appears that San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will be behind center when they play the Detroit Lions.  Head coach Norv Turner and athletic trainer James Collins erred on the side of caution in giving Rivers an extra day of rest; Rivers is expected to practice today and tomorrow.

Rivers was injured with 10 1/2 minutes remaining in the second quarter of last Sunday’s game at Tennessee; he missed the balance of the first half, but returned after halftime and led the Chargers to a 23-17 overtime win.  If Rivers is not able to play Sunday, reserve QB Billy Volek would start for the first time since October 23, 2005.
