Tomlinson Struggles Again as San Diego Loses to Green Bay 31-24

Norv Turner the Big Loser
San Diego’s plan to establish the running game against the Packers failed miserably as RB LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for only 62 yards on 22 carries averaging 2.8 yards per carry. QB Philip Rivers however, had a great day until he threw his one and only interception in the fourth quarter. Rivers completed his first 15 passes, which ties Dan Fouts’ franchise record for consecutive completions. He completed 27-36 for 306 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. TE Antonio Gates capitalized on the Packers’ focus on stopping Tomlinson as he caught 11 passes for 113 yards.

The San Diego defense failed to get after QB Brett Favre and only recorded 2 sacks. The defensive backs looked fast but gave up a huge play in the fourth quarter allowing WR Greg Jennings to take a 10 yard slant a total of 57 yards for a TD. The most glaring problem with the defense is that they look lost in the middle without a solid MLB, LB Carlos Polk was not able to fill the shoes of injured LB Matt Wilhelm. This is evident in the fact that two safeties, Clinton Hart and Marlon McCree, led the team in tackles with 6 and 4 respectively. Polk finished with just 4 tackles, LB Shaun Phillips, CB Quentin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie also each had 4 tackles. LB Shawne Merriman however, did not have a very productive day he finished with just 2 assists. The defense did a solid job stopping Green Bay’s weak rushing attack holding them to 42 yards on the ground but they got torched by Favre in the passing game for 363 yards.

Fans witnessed an unusual occurrence in the 3rd qtr of Sunday’s ball game. Tomlinson and Rivers were screaming at each other and it appeared Tomlinson was handling most of the vocals. After the game Tomlinson told the media, “It appears to be like we’re arguing, but it wasn’t really arguing. It was competitive talk.” It was Tomlinson’s frustrations getting the best of him. It will be interesting to see how the Chargers handle their frustration in the coming weeks. Head Coach Norv Turner however, doesn’t have much to say as he told the press, “My expectations, the expectations of our players was to come in and win, we didn’t get that done.”
