Wilhelm To Miss Pre-Season Opener

Starting ILB Matt Wilhelm will not play against the Seahawks in the Chargers’ pre-season opener because of a strained calf. Wilhelm injured his calf during Thursday’s practice. The team is unsre of how long Wilhelm is going to be sidelined with the strained calf. In his absence, ILB Tim Dobbins will get the start. Chargers.com reports that Norv Turner said that Wilhelm’s injury will give Stephen Copper and oppurtunity to run with the first team nickel defense. It has been a pretty close battle for the first-string ILB job with the nickel package betweeen Wilhelm and Cooper so far and this will only make it more competitive. Rookie ILB Nick Roach will also see some extra playing time against the Seahawks because of Wilhelm’s inability to play.
