Chargers Looking at CB in Thursday’s Supplemental Draft

CB Paul Oliver
Both ESPN and Yahoo sports have reported that the Chargers are interested in Paul Oliver. Oliver, a cornerback from Georgia, was predicted by many to be a pre-season All-American this season. Several college football experts also think he would have been the best player on Georgia’s roster this season, but because of poor grades Oliver is academically ineligible for the 07’ NCAA football season and will enter the NFL’s supplemental draft. That is good news for the San Diego Chargers though as they will probably need another cornerback following this season, as it appears that this will be CB Drayton Florence’s last year with the bolts.

He was a lockdown defender for the bulldogs last season, shutting down WR Calvin Johnson (#2 selection in this years Draft). He was named to the All-SEC defensive team last season with 57 tackles and 3 interceptions. Despite a lackluster 40 time around 4.5, Oliver shows tremendous speed on the field. He didn’t appear to get outrun by any wide receivers in the SEC last season. He has great technique and that is an important quality for young defenders to have if they hope to see the field in the first few years of their career. Oliver also has something that can’t be taught: a nose for the football. I think that is where he makes up for his 40-time because he is able to react much quicker than other defenders and receivers.

Oliver stands at 5’11” and 195 lbs. combined with long arms. He is the ideal size for a CB in the NFL especially with the growing trend of large wide receivers. He exhibits the talent required to cover the large wide receivers he will face off against in the NFL.

Yahoo reports that Oliver has worked out with the Falcons, Chargers and possibly a few other teams. In order to select Oliver on Thursday’s (7/12) supplemental draft the Chargers will have to give up a mid round selection in next years draft and have to include Oliver’s contract into this years rookie salary pool.

I think that the Chargers have some great CB’s that have improved significantly over the past few years. Especially Quentin Jammer, he used to be a pass interference machine but last season he seemed to be able harness his aggressiveness into smarter play. I believe Antonio Cromartie will be a sensational CB for the Bolts, he has great size and extreme speed. He continues to gain experience and that is going to help him become one of the most exciting CB’s in the NFL. Drayton Florence is a lockdown corner and is a huge reason why the Chargers are able to blitz as much as they do. Florence will have another big year and sadly it will most likely be his last in a Chargers Uniform. Picking up Oliver would fill that hole before it even opened up and give him a year to get ready before he was desperately needed. Check chargersgab.com on Thursday to find out if the Chargers selected Oliver in the NFL Supplemental Draft.
