LaDainian Tomlinson Nominated for 4 ESPY’s

LaDainian Tomlinson
L.T. has been nominated for:
Best Male Athlete
The other nominees are Roger Federer, LeBron James, Peyton Manning and Tiger Woods.
Best Record-Breaking Performance
Tomlinson’s competition in this category are Bobby Knight, Michael Phelps and Kelly Slater.
Best NFL Player
The other players nominated are Drew Brees, Larry Johnson, Peyton Manning, Jason Taylor and Brian Urlacher.
The HUMMER Like Nothing Else Award
L.T.’s competition for this award are LeBron James, Michael Phelps, Kendric Smith (high school RB), and Diana Taurasi.

The Best Male Athlete Award is a toss up. There are so many great athletes in this category and they all are deserving of the distinction.

Tomlinson was in the running for last years Best NFL Player but Seattle RB Shaun Alexander awarded the distinction. Hopefully this year will be a lot different and it appears it will. Chances are good that Tomlinson will take home at least one award.

The Best Record-Breaking Performance category will be a tough one to win because Bobby Knight surpassed a pretty huge milestone when he recorded the most coaching victories in NCAA basketball history. Phelps and Slater shouldn’t provide too much competition as they are both superstars of non-mainstream sports. So L.T. stands a decent chance for this one.

Being named the NFL’s most valuable player last season certainly puts him towards the front of the back in The Best NFL Player category. But Peyton Manning did win the Super Bowl last year so it is going to be a close race.

The HUMMER Like Nothing Else Award will be an interesting one. Nobody ever accomplished what L.T. did last season, smashing the NFL’s single season TD record. But there is tough competition in this category as well. This writer beleives that this award should definitely go to Tomlinson. Taurasi and Phelps don’t compete in front of a mainstream audience and LeBron couldn’t finish. King James di great things in Cleveland and single-handedly led the Cavs to the NBA Finals but it’s not like he broke the NBA’s single season scoring record.

This years ESPY’s will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and LeBron James. Kimmel is an obvious choice as host as he is funny and can relate to most sports fans. LeBron was kind of a surprising choice. But I got to see him a lot this season as I covered the Cleveland Cavaliers and attended many a press conference where LeBron was witty and personable. This year’s ESPY awards are sure to be entertaining.
